NEW LONDON- On March 18, 1937, a day much like any other in the unincorporated districts of London and New London, in Rusk County, a generation of East Texas was lost. Several events are planned the week of March 18 in observance of the 75th anniversary of the New London School natural gas explosion and the opening of Mother Frances Hospital. NACOGDOCHES-  Arthur Weaver helped found the Nacogdoches Chapter of NAACP, organized the Nacogdoches County Voter’s League and the Nacogdoches County Community Foundation. Mr. Weaver’s homestead is located on the corner of Martin Luther King Drive, and Lucas Street. Recently a request was made to rename Lucas Street in honor of Mr. Weaver. The request was submitted to the recently formed “Naming Committee.” The committee’s recommendation was heard and approved by the Nacogdoches City Council last month.  “It is our privilege to be able to honor Mr. Weaver and his accomplishments in this way,” said Mayor Roger Van Horn.
